Während den ersten Jahren meiner neuen Arbeit als radelnder Autor hatte ich das Glück mitten im Aufbruch der MTB Szene zu stehen. Diese Mountain Bikes eigneten sich hervorragend für Schotterpisten, Forstwege und Trails. Für mich als Tourenfahrer die optimale Lösung von den mit Autos überfüllten Strassen alternative Routen und Forstwege einzuschlagen. Ich kaufte mir ein Bianchi MTB und nahm mir die Zeit mit dem Bike viele Wege in der Bergwelt Europas zu erforschen. Die Alpen und die Wälder in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Italien, Frankreich und natürlich in Südtirol wurden zu meiner neuen Spielwiese und Leidenschaft. Fotografieren, Radfahren und die Berichte im Sportjournal nahmen meine Zeit in Anspruch. Um Kontakte zur Fahrradindustrie und den Medien zu knüpfen besuchte ich internationale Touristik und Fahrradmessen in Europa. Ich war auf der Suche nach Sponsoren. Dies war für mich eine enorme Herausforderung. Nachdem ich Berichte in den Medien
publizierte und die ersten Bücher meiner Reisen erschienen hatte ich es etwas leichter Sponsoren zu finden. Das Tourenfahren in aller Welt wollte ich unbedingt fortsetzen um am Ende der Tour mit einem Buch und einem Vortrag die Besucher meiner Veranstaltungen zum Radfahren zu motivieren. Für mich waren es kleine Erfolge als Radnomade auf der Bühne zu stehen und eine andere Lebenseinstellung zu präsentieren. Wir lebten auf einem kleinen, alten, wunderschön gelegenen Bauernhof im Sarntal. Renate meine Frau arbeitete im kleinen Krankenhaus im Dorf. Im Winter war ich oft mit meinem Tourenrad und der Ausrüstung unterwegs. Renate begleitete mich oft während meinen Touren in Südamerika, Afrika, Australien, Asien und natürlich in Südtirol.

During the first years of my work as author, writer and cyclist I felt very lucky as the Mountainbike craze just arrived from the USA in Europe. These new bikes with fat tyres and colourful frames were fantastic to cycle on gravel roads, forest paths and single trails. It seemed the perfect solution to get off the busy roads and experience nature with a mountain bike. During the summer months, I cycled the most beautiful off-road places Europe had to offer. Taking pictures and enjoying the newly found method of travelling has been fantastic. I travelled in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France and of course in South Tyrol. I needed to make new contacts in the bike industry. I decided to visit bicycle trade shows and tourist fairs in Europe's big cities. Contact's which were very important. I had many articles printed and the first guidebooks about South Tyrol by bike were just about to be published. I wanted to continue to do big bike trips and have a presentation of my trip if possible with a book. I enjoyed telling people about my travels and show them some pictures where I have been and what I have done. For most people my way of living and travelling was a little too extreme. My wife Renate worked at the little hospital in the alpine Village of Sarnthein. We lived there and used the place as a base. Renate did travel with me sometimes to places in South America, Australia, Africa, Asia and South Tyrol before we finally settled in Australia.
